Society To Award Scholarships

The Lancaster Italian Cultural Society will award two $1,000 college scholarships for 2009. This year’s applicants will be reviewed by four judges selected by the Society. They are:

*Dr. Cynthia Burkhart, Executive Director, Lancaster-Lebanon IU-13

*Enrica Gerhart, Principal, Akron Elementary School

*Lawrence Roda, English Teacher (retired) McCaskey High School

*Giovanna Faleschini Lerner, Asst. Professor of Italian, F&M college

Applicants for the scholarship must be of Italian descent, a member of the Society or child or grandchild of a member of the Society. Qualified students must pick up their application at their high school guidancecounselor’s office as soon as possible. This year’s applicants are required to write an essay on one of two categories that relate to their Italian heritage. They are: the Italian religions and Italy. The successful applicants will be notified by mail.

The Board of the Society has established a scholarship committee, chaired by LICS board member, Helen Ebersole, to obtain qualified applicants for 2009. LICS member, Marie Witkonis, also serves on the committee.

"The Lancaster Italian Cultural Society was formed to promote and share an appreciation and awareness of the Italian culture and heritage."
We develop an awareness of the contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to the development of the United States of America and the world. In addition, we sponsor artistic and cultural activities of Italian origin in the community. The Lancaster Italian Cultural Society promotes a greater understanding of the social mores and the values of the Italian heritage in the community. In doing so we develop a greater sense of pride in Italian Americans for their Italian heritage with special emphasis upon educating Italian American youth, including but not limited to sponsoring scholarships, awards, and recognition for community service.
